Setting up family tree is just one of the many aspects that someone interested in genealogy can become involved in. It is also an ideal opportunity for the whole family to become involved in locating and discovering their past family history, uncovering secrets and family legends that may have been long forgotten.

The most practical start to developing a family tree is by starting with yourself and working around your immediate family to start the journey. If you are not sure where exactly to start, then having a genealogy website setup will make the task of acquiring all the information required much easier. The research will still have to be done manually but at least the genealogy website will indicate a starting point, and information can be loaded in concise and workable manner and at the touch of a button the information can be organised and printed out.

Your mother and father are your direct link to your ancestors and will be a valuable source of information. Ask them to help by relating stories of past family events, gatherings, periods of time gone by and anything else related to your families past history. Family photos are an excellent way to jog failing memories, especially once your parents have helped as much as they can and you are required to ask your grandparents to fill in some of the earlier gaps.

Start your genealogy journey by writing your name and surname a top of a page and under that, connected by a line the name of your father and by another line your mothers name and her maiden name. This will give two distinct different family lines to follow and will show exactly how your family is made up. Follow suit for every other name that is entered into your database and watch how your family tree spreads its branches.

Depending on how much information has been saved about your history by family members will determine how easy or how difficult your genealogy journey will be. To fully uncover your family history and develop your family tree you may have to resort to information databases like early church documents, wills and deeds to gather necessary information about lost family members.

Using a genealogy website package does have certain advantages. Many good ‘family tree maker’ software’s have the ability to search ancestry databases on the web, making the task of locating and identifying lost family members so much easier. Genealogy website is also packed with other neat ways to organise, find and display all your information that you have uncovered.

With the internet creeping into our daily lives on a more frequent basis the ability to setup and design your family tree is made so much easier. Genealogy and the search for family history is becoming a favourite pastime for many families. Your family tree is your direct link to your past; you may even discover that your origins may have started from noble descendants or even a famous person that may have forged the way not only for your family but for many others.

Family history and genealogy starts at home. Always work backwards making sure that the information you have gathered is accurate so as not to break the chain. Your family most likely have gathered a wealth of information over the years and this would most certainly help in discovering who you are and where you come from and enable you to setup a family
